Get to Know Us
Killyleagh Development Association, KDA, formed 40 years ago- set up to rebuild community and the infrastructure of Killyleagh . Once a small down, Killyleagh entered a period of decline during the Troubles and the economic downturn that resulted from industrial change. Two local factories employing over 500 people were closed during the 1970s and the 30 shops and business reduced in number to 11.
KDA was started by a small group of philanthropists and councillors to support the much-loved town. Located in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the shores of Strangford Lough, with its Chateau style Castle, Killyleagh has much to offer its inhabitants and the group recognised that there was much to support tourism as a future potential for economic growth. In those early days KDA bought , renovated and leased out properties so that small businesses could survive and maintain the life of the now, village. This work continues today with a Café/ Delicatessen (Forage), a Beauty Salon (Serena’s Beauty ) a Photographer and Therapists. In the past the businesses included an Art Gallery and Bespoke Cabinet Designer.
Today KDA reviews and evaluates many other projects that have the potential to enhance the town. KDA seeks new Board Members to help realise the projects of the future as Killyleagh is beginning to prosper and grow.
